Brain Dump on Cormorants
Yesterday in the Burlington Free Press, Candace Page wrote an article about Fish and Wildlife officials announcing a plan to control Double-crested Cormorants and Ring-billed Gulls on Lake Champlain. After reading the article, and the 30 comments found online, I find myself perplexed by how often issues like this get forced into black & white solutions rather than a more thorough look at the complexity of wildlife management and it’s implications.
Getting My Beek-On
I have been a naturalist for more than 15 years enjoying the beauty of the Northeast. Working for Audubon in Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire & Massachusetts. On the surface, it would seem that I was a bird geek from the start. But whoa there, not so! I was a generalist when in came to natural history and to tell you the truth - turned off by \"birders\".
Competitive, stuffy and sometimes rude, I got turned off of birding. Just not interested. Not interested until I met a number of laid-back, fun-loving, knowledge-sharing Vermonters who really turned me on to birding. Blame them for my uber-birder status now with a serious dose of craziness, science & conservation now all mixed together!
